GENERAL OBJECTIVE OF THE COURSE
Get acquainted with the Catalan language system, its sounds and spelling. Understand short and simple spoken texts on general topics and learn basic language for everyday conversations. Acquire basic knowledge on Catalan society and culture.
TARGET AUDIENCE
People who neither speak nor understand Catalan and who wish to develop verbal language skills in order to interact with their environment or carry out their professional tasks.
COMMUNICATIVE APPROACH
The course is based on different communication situations and thematic areas which enable learners to carry out tasks in which they have to show both spoken and written language proficiency suitable to the level.
CONTENT
Communication skills
● Greeting, saying goodbye, introducing themselves and responding to ‘thank you’.
● Asking for and giving personal information about themselves (name, telephone number, place of origin, occupation, etc.) or about another person.
● Asking for and giving information about the family, workplace, home, everyday activities and hobbies.
● Asking and saying where someone lives. Asking for and giving directions on the location of a building.
● Asking for and telling the time, telling the date and situating themselves in time.
● Getting and giving information on the timetables of services or means of transport and where to go to find a particular means of transport.
● Identifying people. Describing someone’s physical appearance, the way they dress or their personality.
● Having simple phone conversations.
● Filling in forms and registration forms with essential personal information.
Grammar
● The Catalan alphabet.
● Determiners: definite, indefinite and personal articles, demonstrative pronouns (aquest, aquell, això, allò...), possessive pronouns (el meu, la teva, els seus...), indefinite pronouns (algun, cada, tot...), interrogative pronouns, modifying comparatives (més, menys, tant...), quantifiers (molt, bastant, algun, uns quants, poc, gens, cap, tot...) and cardinal (from 0 to 100) and ordinal numbers.
● Nouns and adjectives: gender and number inflection.
● Verbs: uses and conjugation of the present indicative tense of regular and irregular first-, second- and third-conjugation verbs (cantar, estar, córrer, ser, haver-hi, dormir, tenir, conduir...). Uses and conjugation of the future infinitive tense. The infinitive and gerund.
● Verbal periphrases anar a + infinitive and estar + gerund.
● Pronouns: personal, possessive (meu, teu, seves...), interrogative (què, com, qui, on, quant...) and indefinite (res, tothom, ningú...).
● Weak pronouns: direct object pronouns en, ho; indirect object pronoun li; locative pronoun hi and reflexive pronouns.
● Prepositions (a, de, en, fins a...) and contractions and appositives with a definite article.
● Adverbs of time (sempre, mai, abans...), place (aquí, allà, amunt, dins...), manner (a poc a poc, de pressa...), etc.
● Conjunctions (i, o, però...).
Vocabulary
● Etymology: demonyms and trades.
● Thematic areas:
○ Family.
○ Personal characteristics: physical, character and personality traits.
○ Clothing, accessories and colours.
○ Everyday activities and items related to everyday activities (work, home, food, sleep, personal hygiene...).
○ Time: hours, parts of the day, days of the week, months and seasons of the year, timetables.
○ Work: occupations.
○ Means of transport.
○ Leisure activities in nature and landscapes (muntanya, carretera, arbre, vall...).
○ Popular festivals.
○ Parts of the house.
All content will be worked on in an interrelated fashion throughout the course.
MODALITY
In-person, hybrid and online (asynchronous, synchronous and semi-synchronous).
DURATION
45 hours
ASSESSMENT
Assessment is continuous based on course work.

CERTIFICATION
Attendance/completion
Attendance certificates are for in-person, hybrid, synchronous and semi-synchronous online courses. Completion certificates are for asynchronous online courses. For these certificates to be issued, students must have attended or watched at least 75% of the course.
Attendance and completion certificates are only issued upon the students’ request through the processes page.
Achievement and attendance/completion
If the requirements for marks and attendance/completion are met, the CPNL will issue an achievement certificate that accredits the successful completion of the level in order to continue the learning process. This is not equivalent to any certificate from the relevant department in language policy. These certificates also accredit attendance or completion of the course.
