GENERAL OBJECTIVE OF THE COURSE

Understand short and simple spoken texts and learn basic language for everyday conversations on general topics. Write a short text using very basic vocabulary. Acquire some basic knowledge on Catalan society and culture.

TARGET AUDIENCE

People who neither speak nor understand Catalan and who wish to develop verbal language skills in order to interact with their environment or carry out their professional tasks.

COMMUNICATIVE APPROACH

The course is based on different communication situations and thematic areas which enable learners to carry out tasks in which they have to show both spoken and written language proficiency suitable to the level.

CONTENT

Communication skills

● Understanding both spoken and written informative, advertising, instructional, descriptive and narrative texts in general.
● Greeting, saying goodbye, introducing themselves and responding to ‘thank you’.
● Having simple phone conversations.
● Expressing feelings and moods.
● Expressing preferences and asking for opinions.
● Explaining everyday activities.
● Explaining a health-related incident and describing the symptoms related to a health condition.
● Explaining a home-related incident and requesting repairs.
● Making recommendations in case of emergency or in the event of a health problem.
● Making guesses.
● Creating a spoken advertisement to sell a product.
● Talking about past events and experiences that happened to them and other people.
● Proposing, suggesting, advising and making recommendations.
● Giving instructions and leaving spoken and written instructions.
● Describing homes and other places in the environment.
● Describing people (both physical and character traits), the way they dress and their character. Comparing them and saying who someone resembles.
● Describing the weather.
● Asking for and giving personal information about themselves (name, telephone number, place of origin, occupation, etc.), another person, the family, workplace, home, everyday activities and hobbies.
● Asking for and giving directions on how to move around, where a certain service is or how to get there or the premises or facilities of a building.
● Asking for and telling the time, telling the date and situating themselves in time.
● Asking for and giving information on timetables of services or means of transport.
● Queuing for their turn in a shop, asking for information on items, requesting a product, asking for its price and paying. Issuing simple orders.
● Ordering food in a restaurant, asking for information on the dishes and giving an opinion on the food and restaurants.
● Asking for help or a favour.
● Asking for and giving information on a job, responding to job posts and commenting on and assessing working conditions and job requirements.
● Asking for information and making recommendations about holiday destinations or leisure activities. Making bookings and complaints.
● Asking for and giving information on general topics in the present, past and future tenses.
● Filling in forms and registration forms with essential personal information.
● Making a shopping list.
● Writing simple instructions for a recipe.

Grammar

● The Catalan alphabet.
● Determiners:    articles,    demonstrative pronouns,    possessive pronouns,     indefinite pronouns,    modifying comparatives, quantifiers, collective nouns, multipliers, ordinal and cardinal numbers as well as fractions.
● Nouns and adjectives: gender and number inflection.
Verbs: indicative mood (present, perfect, imperfect, periphrastic past, future and conditional), imperative mood and subjunctive mood (present for prohibitions, imperfect for conditional sentences). Non-finite verb forms.
● Verbal periphrases anar a + infinitive and estar + gerund, periphrases of obligation and probability.
● Tonic personal pronouns and forms of address (tu/vostè), possessive, interrogative, indefinite, adverbial, reflexive and weak pronouns (direct object, indirect object and locative).
● Adverbs of place, time, manner and possibility.
● Conjunctions and prepositions.

Vocabulary

● Synonyms and antonyms.
● Etymology: demonyms, trades, businesses, uses of objects and recipients, dimensions and measurements, plants and fruit trees.
● Thematic areas:
      ○ Family.
      ○ Biographies.
      ○ Personal characteristics: physical, the way they dress, character and personality traits, tastes and hobbies. Emotional states.
      ○ Everyday activities and items related to everyday activities (work, home, food, sleep, personal hygiene...).
      ○ Time: hours, parts of the day, days of the week, months and seasons of the year, timetables.
      ○ Work: occupations, working conditions, working hours, salary, holidays, job positions, spaces in work environments…
      ○ Education.
      ○ Characteristics of the neighbourhood, town or city and businesses and services.
      ○ Means of transport.
      ○ Holidays and leisure: incidents, anecdotes, complaints, weather, landscapes, outings, equipment and popular festivals.
      ○ Parts of the house.
      ○ Buying and selling, items and prices.
      ○ Foods and meals: businesses, recipes, ingredients and adjectives (cru, tendre, dur, aspre...).
      ○ Health: minor accidents, feeling unwell, common illnesses.
      ○ Childhood and children’s games.
      ○ Items and materials (guix, plàstic, fusta, pedra...).

All content will be worked on in an interrelated fashion throughout the course.

In-person, hybrid and online (asynchronous, synchronous and semi-synchronous).

DURATION

120 hours

ASSESSMENT

The assessment is the sum of the course assessment (and, therefore, the follow-up of the work proposed by the teacher) plus the final mark of the achievement test. Course mark (0-20); final assessment mark (0-80).

Achievement (recognised degree equivalent to certification from the Secretariat for Language Policy) and certificate of attendance/completion.
